Knock Off seemed like an original movie–mini-bombs in pirated jeans. The concept was indeed original, and so was the rest of the plot. Pirated items played a major part. However, it was all too confusing and jumpy. The fact that the camera couldn’t remain in place for more than a few second helped me to endure the whole movie, but its jumping between scenes just made the movie impossible to comprehend.
Just another brain-dead action movie.
The Astronaut Farmer tells the story of a retired NASA employee, who builds his own rocket and wants to launch it into “deep” space (orbit around Earth). It is a touching story, although it Michael Polish takes the touching way too far. It feels more like a oh-they’re-so-happy movie for making people dream the American Dream. It doesn’t really give anything to the audience.
Certain details also detract from the overall impression of The Astronaut Farmer. For example, the NASA engineer Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) is surprised by a very basic phenomenon, which will most certainly irritate you if you decide to watch this movie.
The start of Code Name: The Cleaner is the perfect set-up for any action/thriller movie. However, director Les Mayfield effectively wastes the idea by by following the introduction with a series of nonsensical scenes, giving to audience zero change for any prediction. According to IMDb this is a comedy, although I could not find anything remotely funny with the attempts at entertaining an audience from elementary school. Throwing cleaning-devices? Come on.
Just skip Code Name: The Cleaner. It is a waste of time, despite actors like Nicollette Sheridan and Lucy Liu.
Perfect Stranger contains an intricate plot, with several twists. On the same time, its psychological aspects are scary. The regular black-and-white, good-and-bad separation of characters does certainly not work here, no matter how much of the movie you watch.
Another nice point with the movie is that they actually use Google and not some home-made search engine.
Succubus: Hell Bent has a quite simple plot, and little character development. However, there is a nice atmosphere and the same tone is kept throughout the movie.
What really irritated me was the demon-hunting. It’s fine that Lilith is supernatural, and that the demon-hunter was a little weird, but what about a demon-hunter who doesn’t have a clue about how to kill or banish demons?
Garlic? I thought that was for vampires. A gun with silver bullets? That’s for lycanthropes. The regular crossbow? No comment. It surprises me that he didn’t recommend seducing the succubus. Also, the movie states that a succubus is a weaker form of the incubus.
Don’t watch this movie if you’ve ever played any fantasy game including demons; it will drive you mad.
Fabric of Time is a somewhat interesting documentary about finding the truth of Christianity in a piece of cloth which is said to have covered Jesus. When I started watching it, I was expecting a pro-atheistic religion bash, but the documentary disappointed me. It seemed serious and very unbiased. Still, my atheistic beliefs were not swayed by it, and it didn’t really come to any conclusion. However, it contained an interesting, yet brief, introduction to quantum physics, which has always interested me.
Serenity is the best movie I’ve seen for a long while. This excellent science fiction adventure is very close to The Matrix and Star Wars on my top list. The Serenity setting has had a lot of thought in it, and the mysteries introduced in the beginning unveil at a perfect tempo. Several times your heart skips a beat when you realise how things go together. Never a boring moment with Serenity.
As soon as I have time, I’m going to try to find the Firefly series at some store.
Seung chi sun tau (English title: Twins’ Mission) did contain a lot of good fighting scenes. Come to think of it, there wasn’t much else than fighting.
Since I watched the movie in Chinese (or Japanese; I don’t know) and without subtitles, I didn’t understand a thing about the storyline. There were seemingly important cards thrown around unrealistically skillfully, adding to the overall weirdness. I do not recommend it unless you have some homework to do during the movie.
The Last King of Scotland is a reality-based drama-thriller which provokes a lot of feelings, for several opposed characters. Many parts of the movie are scary, and even more so when you realize that it probably is close to the truth. Both sides of power are revealed.
Whispers from a Shallow Grave is a documentary-like story about the murderer of a young model. It is interesting how the movie offers insight into the thoughts of this murderer. Although his illusions are doubtful, it is not overly unrealistic.
