Can’t Log In to MSN Messenger: 80048820, Proxy
Today I tried to log in to MSN Messenger. Unfortunately it failed, giving the cryptic error message:
Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger at this time. Please try again later.
To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button.
80048820
Unfortunately, this error message seems to appear as the consequence of a lot of errors. Only the 80048820 identification part gives anything. I chose to troubleshoot, just like they told me. The following parts succeeded (roughly translated from Swedish):
- IP
- Standard gateway
- Offline-options for IE
- Host files
- DNS
After them, two failed:
- Proxy server
- Main entrances
The wireless part didn’t get a success/failure mark, which probably is because I don’t have a wireless connection. It seems pretty obvious that the proxy server doesn’t work, and checking reveals that there is indeed a non-responding proxy set in Internet Explorer. After removing it, MSN Messenger worked again.
I’ve been told that there are several symptoms that might cause error 80048820, but this worked fine for me.

I do not sing in to my msn
Becose troubleshoot 80048820
Where is problem?

Paul, what error code do you get? Try googling for it. Perhaps you’re just using the wrong password.

Felix: Try going through the steps described in this post. If it doesn’t work, google the extended error code and try to troubleshot through MSN Messenger.
Comment by Tim — November 3, 2006 @ 9:11 pm
For some reason unknown to me I’ve been locked out of MSN. The last time I logged on to MSN was last Tuesday (N0v 21st). I went out of town on Wednesday and returned on Saturday and discovered that I could not log on to MSN. My bill is current so that’s not the problem.
When I try to log on the log on screen appears but over it appears another screen with a message that says MSN has detected an error. There are two buttons on the bottom of this screen that allow you to either report the error to MSN or not report it. When you select either of the buttons, the log on screen and the error message screen disappears.
Also, when I checked the Security option it shows that MSN and rheath have been disconnected from the computer. There are only two accounts set up (mine and my husbands). His account did not appear to be disconnected.
I’m writing this email from my job where I was able to log on to MSN under my account log in name (rheath@msn.com).
I need a telephone number to MSN so I can call them from home and have someone guide me through the steps of correcting this problem. I’m computer “friendly” and not “savvy” - so, I’ll need help all the way.
Please respond soon!
Comment by Roslyn Harris — November 27, 2006 @ 8:33 pm
Roslyn Harris: If I understand your problem correctly, the only combination of computer and MSN-address that does not work is your address with your computer at home. That is, your husband’s address works at home and yours works from your job. If that is the case, I have absolutely no idea. Assuming that you have a legal Windows-copy, you should call Microsoft’s support.

Pretty much same prob I’ve been having with msn 8, I even tried using msn’s connection settings to resolve my internet, and it seem to but it sill wont connect.
The trouble soot message that pops up when it doenst connect allows you to repair connection, but even after that it fails to connect.
Why do microsft have to put millions settings that users dont really care about, keep it simeple for fuck sake, we just want to use to chat.
Til microsoft fixes msn8 problems I’ll stick with 7.5 version which works flawlessly :D

Everytime i try to log into msn messenger 1 of the 3 things happens: 1st of all, if i try to log in after i have open anything, it won’t let me in and when i troubleshoot, i doesn’t fix anything. 2nd when i log in when i have nothing running besides the internet connection, it will let me in sometimes, but then after a short period of time it stops and says “messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close sorry for any inconvenience” and 3rd if i do the same as in 2nd, it will let me in but start having problems like i can’t see some of my friends messages or my or my friends messages are very slow. please help me i don’t know what to do and im desperate!

Taylor, in order to remove a non-responding proxy from MSN Messenger, you have to remove it from Internet Explorer. Messenger uses the IE connection.

I have not used MSN Explorer for years and yet starting a few weeks ago the screen for signing in appears on my monitor constantly. I sent a message to AOL and received a reply that said I should contact Microsoft for updates. I did so but nothing is changed and I can’t stop the MSN screen from popping up. I want to eliminate the MSN Explorer program but am afraid I will eliminate programs I wish to keep such as Microsoft Games. Help or solutions are needed. Thank you.

Yes, I hit the submit button twice because I neglected to mark the “notify me” sentence.

Jim, I agree that it can be very disturbing. There is an option to disable this somewhere; just look through the preferences in MSN Messenger.

Tim, Thank you for the tip/advice. For some reason the MSN screen is not popping up this morning. Maybe I hit the right key by accident last night or the rebooting fixed things until I hit another button later on. This has happened before but never to the extreme of last night. Thanks again and wish me luck.

OK Guys,
YOUR SOLUTION
Its most likely you have a firewall software protecting your computer.
I have Norton Internet Security… and when i get that error its because MSN has somehow been blocked by NIS.
To fix this problem I look up all Allow and Not Allowed Programs from accessing the net. Its ussualy in not allowed… Just remove it from the list and it should work
If USING OTHER FIREWALL SOFTWARE
Try using the Norton method or switch your firewall off… sign in and then switch your firewall back on… by memory it used to work.

Comment by kingnutteruk — June 24, 2007 @ 9:06 am
My msn won’t log me in because it claims that there is something wrong with my internet connection or its service. Internet Explorer works perfectly and I trawled past all the crap on the help pages to find that apparantly msn’s service had no problems either. There is no error code and I can’t contact them for help because they want to email me the response AND I CANT FUCKING ACCESS MY ONLY ADDRESS!!! What do I do? It’s only started the past couple of days and I don’t know why….
Comment by bunnyfoofoo — June 26, 2007 @ 9:37 pm
I am having several problems that all began at the same time.
1) I cannot log in to MSN messenger. I get error 80048820. I clicked troubleshoot and the repair button that
followed, which failed to fix the problem, but did generate a 2nd error code: 80072efd. I have checked my
PC date and time and it is correct. I also tried to use the time synchronize button from “date and time
properties”, this failed to synchronize. I have run the various regsvr32 ******.dll commands and all were
successful. I did a winsock fix. I have compared my proxy settings with a friend running the same OS and
that checks out ok. I ran the MSN messenger repair, then uninstalled MSN messenger and reinstalled it.
Still cannot log in.
2) Internet Explorer opens but will not connect to anything. Just hangs with a white screen saying
connecting.
3) The add/remove programs on the windows control panel opens but hangs with a white screen saying
populating list. Everything else from the control panel seems to work fine.
4) I can not get any windows updates from “microsoft.com” On the page “searching for updates for your
computer”, I get this error:” 0×80072EFD - The website has encountered a problem and cannot display
the page you are trying to view. ” This has gone on for the last 5 days, so surely it isn’t a problem with the
website.
This began after a program called spy catcher by Tenebril ran a spyware check. After the check was complete my PC would freeze up completely for 2 minutes then work again for 4 minutes, and continually
repeat this cycle. I have manually removed most of spy catcher and ghost surf by the same company. This solved the freeze up problem but the other 4 problems listed above continue. It seems to be that MSn messenger and internet explorer “think” I am not connected to the internet. Does anyone have any idea as to
what is causing this?
Thankyou
Comment by Jamie Mc — August 5, 2007 @ 2:23 pm
Jamie, I have a theory. Have you checked the proxy configuration of Internet Explorer? The spyware might have fiddled a bit with them, and MSN Messenger uses the same connection as IE.

Ok, some people in here are having different problems to others.
The one i was having (which was solved quick because i know to look around and find the answer) was the fact my email says i live in Japan whereas my ip address states im in England….this applies to the
80048820 and Extended Error code 80048412
all you do is go into internet explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (the tab) >
Under “Security”
make sure that “Check for Publishers Certificate Revocation” is checked, as is “Use SSL 2.0″ and “Use SSL 3.0″
this should sort that problem out.
if that doesn’t work then you have a DIFFERENT problem (as it is stated this code applies to many things, it’s that particular extended code that applies to what i have just wrote)

NOOOOOO I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!,geez the problem is not the time and date(sometimmes it is but if you fixed your time and date and the problem persists then thats not the cause, duh)
Use a tool called “Dr.TCP” just Google it, you will find it.Now, when you start the program DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING(unless you are an advanced user, and you know what you are doing), leave everything in default, now where it says MTU put these number 1400. Restart you internet connection and Msn messenger then log in and enjoy!
To reconnect just go to Start, all programs, accessories, communications, netwotk connections, look for you network adapter name and right-click it, then click disable using DSL, (if you are using dial-up click disconnect and open up again) then click enable and you are good to go.
And yes you are welcome :P!
