One/B-One is the Evil in our World

Whatever you do: don’t chose One (formerly known as B-One) as your web hosting solution. I first chose them because they seemed cheap, and had a nice site (a very bad way of deciding).

It first began when I asked if they could update PHP to PHP5 from PHP4. Sometime around that, I also asked if they could install other modules for PHP. The answer I got from both questions was that they were unable to change the options.

PHP4 was not the only antique software that they were using. MySQL version: 4.0.24. MySQL 5.0.24 was released in the beginning of this month. One’s phpMyAdmin version? 2.5.7. Latest phpMyAdmin release? 2.9.1. I should say that they now actually offer to upgrade to PHP5, but the other problems remain.

As if this wasn’t enough, my site is down on average several minutes every day. Today, I got an unusual error: The entire site was returning HTTP 403 wherever I went. I tried connecting through FTP: “421: Unable to set up a secure chroot() jail”. Fortunately, their English live support was online.

Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with ‘Kaychelle’
Kaychelle: Thank you for using One.com 24/7 Interactive Online Support. My name is Kaye. How may I assist you?
Tim: Hi Kaye. My site is returning HTTP 403 when I try to connect to it over HTTP
Tim: And “421: Unable to set up a secure chroot() jail” on FTP
Kaychelle: We do not support https
Kaychelle: Secure socket layer is not supported
Tim: That is highly irrelevant to my problem, isn’t it?
Kaychelle: Are you trying to setup a secure connection?
Tim: No
Tim: Neither through FTP nor HTTP
Kaychelle: can you explain your concern?
Tim: My concern is that I am being denied the service that I am being charged for
Kaychelle: I am not getting you. Are you just trying to access the FTP?
Tim: I am trying to access both the HTTP and the FTP — neither works.
Tim: Try yourself: http://gurka.se
Kaychelle: Please hold on while I check
Tim: I just did
Tim: Are you a real person?
Kaychelle: Yes
Kaychelle: I cannot access your FTP, since when did you last access it?
Kaychelle: Since when did it stop working?
Tim: Earlier today
Tim: I think it stopped working about an hour ago
Kaychelle: Which FTP program are you using?
Tim: gFTP 2.0.18
Tim: However, I am more concered that the server responds with 403 on HTTP
Kaychelle: Before that, did you make any changes?
Tim: No.
Kaychelle: Are you sure you have an index file on your root directory?
Tim: No. I had one, but I cannot verify that it is there, because I cannot access the FTP
Kaychelle: I resetted your domain name. You can get back to us after an hour if it still does not work. Also try to delete your temporary files and restart your computer.
Tim: What does resetting a domain name mean?
Kaychelle: Refreshing your server
Tim: By the way, it works again now. Thank you.
Kaychelle: You are welcome.
Kaychelle: Please feel free to contact us again for any further assistance. Good Bye and have a nice time.
Chat session has been terminated by the site operator.

Note that between my “Try yourself” and Kaye’s “Please hold on while I check”, five minutes passed.

Never, ever chose One/B-One for web hosting. It would not surprise me if they were found to have signed a contract with Satan.
